This Cookie Policy explains how BeTranslated International ("we", "us", "our") uses cookies and similar tracking technologies when you visit betranslated.com and its subpaths. It covers the cookies set directly by us, by our hosting and analytics providers, and by embedded third-party content. This policy applies alongside our Privacy Policy and is reviewed whenever we add, replace, or remove a third-party tool from our stack.
What Are Cookies and Similar Technologies
Cookies are small text files that a website places on your device when you visit it. Similar technologies include local storage, session storage, web beacons (pixels), and device fingerprints. We refer to all of these as "cookies" in this policy for simplicity. Cookies can be set either by us (first-party) or by a third-party provider whose script runs on our pages (third-party). Cookies are either session cookies (deleted when you close your browser) or persistent cookies (kept for a defined period).
Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are required for the website to function and cannot be switched off. They include the language preference cookie set by our internationalisation framework and routing cookies set by our hosting provider Vercel. They do not require your consent under GDPR Article 6(1)(f) and the ePrivacy Directive Article 5(3) exemption for strictly necessary cookies.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|
| NEXT_LOCALE | BeTranslated (next-intl) | Stores your preferred site language so we can serve content in the right locale on subsequent visits. | 1 year | First-party |
| __vercel_* | Vercel (hosting) | Routing cookies used by our hosting provider to assign requests to the correct edge or deployment. Set automatically by the platform. | Session | First-party |
Analytics Cookies (Consent Required)
When enabled in production, we use Google Analytics 4 and Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors interact with the site, identify usability issues, and improve content and performance. Both tools run only when their respective environment variables are configured for the deployment, and Google Analytics is configured with IP anonymisation. These cookies are only set with your consent where consent is required by your jurisdiction.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics 4 | Distinguishes unique visitors. Used to measure audience metrics and site traffic. | 2 years | Third-party |
| _ga_<container-id> | Google Analytics 4 | Maintains session state for a specific GA4 property. Used to compute session and engagement metrics. | 2 years | Third-party |
| _clck | Microsoft Clarity | Persists the Clarity user ID and preferences across sessions for the same visitor. | 1 year | Third-party |
| _clsk | Microsoft Clarity | Connects multiple page views by the same user into a single Clarity session recording. | 1 day | Third-party |
| MUID | Microsoft (Clarity / Bing) | Identifies unique web browsers visiting Microsoft sites. Used by Clarity for analytics and product improvement. | 1 year | Third-party |
| ANONCHK, SM, SRM_B | Microsoft (Clarity / Bing) | Supporting cookies used by Microsoft Clarity for session synchronisation, analytics validation, and security. | Session to 1 year | Third-party |
Embedded Third-Party Content
Some pages embed third-party content such as YouTube videos. Where we control the embed, we use privacy-respecting variants that do not set tracking cookies until you actively interact with the player. The cookies below are only set if and when you play an embedded video.
| Cookie / Provider | Purpose | When Set | Duration |
|---|
| YouTube (youtube-nocookie.com) | We embed videos using the YouTube no-cookie variant. YouTube only sets cookies after you start playback. These may include preference cookies (VISITOR_INFO1_LIVE, YSC) and consent cookies (CONSENT) once playback begins. | Only when you play an embedded video | Session to 6 months |
WordPress Blog (Proxied)
Our blog at /blog/, /it/blog/, and /de/blog/ is served by a separate WordPress installation that we proxy through Vercel for performance. WordPress may set its own cookies on those URL paths (for example wordpress_test_cookie, wp-settings-*, comment-author-* if you leave a comment). These cookies are set by WordPress on the betranslated.com domain only when you visit a blog page, and follow WordPress's standard cookie behavior. They are not set on the marketing pages built with Next.js.
| Cookie | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|
| wordpress_test_cookie | WordPress | Set briefly to test that the browser accepts cookies. | Session |
| wp-settings-*, wp-settings-time-* | WordPress | Stores admin user interface preferences. Set only for logged-in WordPress users. | 1 year |
| comment-author-* | WordPress | Stores commenter name, email, and URL when you leave a blog comment, so the form can be pre-filled on return visits. | 1 year |
Forms and Lead Submission
When you submit a form on the site (quote request, callback request, translator application, contact form), the form data is sent to our backend (Supabase) and, where applicable, mirrored to a Google Form for internal workflow. These submissions are processed server-side. We do not set tracking cookies as part of the form submission process. Form processing is described in our Privacy Policy.
Marketing and Advertising
We do not currently run paid advertising tracking, retargeting, or social media tracking pixels (no Meta Pixel, no LinkedIn Insight Tag, no Google Ads conversion tracking) on our marketing pages. If we add such tools in the future, this policy will be updated and prior consent will be sought where required by your jurisdiction.
How to Manage Your Cookie Preferences
You can control cookies in several ways. All major browsers allow you to view, delete, and block cookies through their settings (Privacy and Security in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge). You can also opt out of Google Analytics specifically using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout) and disable Microsoft Clarity tracking through Microsoft's Privacy Dashboard (account.microsoft.com/privacy). Disabling strictly necessary cookies may affect the website's functionality (for example, your language preference will not persist between visits).
Your Rights Under GDPR and ePrivacy
If you are in the European Union, the United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with similar privacy laws, you have the right to give and withdraw consent for optional cookies, request information about the cookies we use, and lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. Withdrawal of consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at hello@betranslated.com.
Updates to This Policy
We update this Cookie Policy whenever we add, change, or remove a tool that sets cookies on our site. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change. Significant changes will also be flagged in the site footer or via a banner on next visit.
